Can loafers ever REALLY make a comeback?

Posted in Fashion, Health & Wellness with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 26, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

For several seasons now loafers have been trying to make a comeback on the fashion scene, but they never seem to really pull it off. What do you think? Can loafers ever REALLY make a comeback? They’ve actually come a long way, baby! Of course, there are still the same traditional styles of loafers out there like the penny loafer, but there are now loafers with animal print, wedges, and high heels. Let’s take a look at some of the various styles of loafers on sale this fall…maybe you’ll like them and even wear them!

Aetrex Nancy Buckle Loafers $144.95 at shoestoboot.com

Aetrex Nancy Buckle Loafers $144.95 at shoestoboot.com

I actually sell these Aetrex loafers in my office, and my patients love them! They like the fact that they are super comfy and still stylish with the patent leather croc upper.

Aerosoles Matter of Fact Loafers $39.99 at Onlineshoes.com

Aerosoles Matter of Fact Loafers $39.99 at Onlineshoes.com

For this price, it would be worth it to try these out! If I needed to wear some loafers for a long day at the office, I would give these a whirl. They’re kinda cute, and Aerosoles have a reputation for being very comfortable.
Coach Sharin Loafers $109.99 at eBay

I actually own these, so I can say that these are comfortable, durable, and, well, they’re Coach so they never really go out of style. I would definitely¬†recommend them!
Gucci Patent Script Logo Rubber Lug Loafers $405.99 at Bluefly.com

Gucci Patent Script Logo Rubber Lug Loafers $405.99 at Bluefly.com

I saw these on Bluefly.com and had to include them…of course, I love black and gray, especially when they’re together, but the other reason I like these is the rubber lug sole. I have not tried these on YET but with a sole like that, these have to feel good! These are now on my “to do list.” ūüôā
Dr Martens High Heel Loafers $120.00 at Wild Free

Dr Martens High Heel Loafers $120.00 at Wild Free

So now we’re getting into the loafers with heels, but these are Dr Martens, so even with a heel I bet these are still pretty comfortable. Look at the sole. It’s like the last rubber sole we looked at…gotta love the rubber, thick soles! Well, our feet will love them anyway! ūüôā
Chloe Cork Wedge Penny Loafers $276.00 at farfetch.com

Chloe Cork Wedge Penny Loafers $276.00 at farfetch.com

I have to admit these are pretty high! But I wanted to include them in this discussion to show you the different styles of loafers out there. But back to this particular shoe…although it’s super high, the cork wedge does add a lot to the comfort of the shoe. I don’t own these, but the cork wedge sandals that I do own are about this high and are really comfortable. I wouldn’t work a long shift in them, but for a lunch date or a meeting where I’d be sitting for a while, I would give them a try. Plus, I kinda like the colors. It’s fun wearing shoes that stand out a little. ūüôā
Tod's Newze Loafer Wedges $396.00 at Bluefly.com
Tod’s Newze Loafer Wedges $396.00 at Bluefly.com

Here’s another wedge loafer¬†but they’re¬†not as high as the last ones…plus, look at the sole. Although they’re thin soled, the sole still looks like it has the rubber grip and cushion that we’ve seen in a couple of the other loafers. They just might be more comfortable on your feet than they seem at first glance. There are a lot of things to consider when looking at comfort, and most people look first at the heel height. But we also have to look at sole thickness, materials used, shape of the toe box, etc.

Well, what do you think? Do you own loafers? But more importantly, do you still wear your loafers? And do you think they’re still stylish?
My answers to these questions: Yes, I own them. Yes, sometimes I wear them for the right occasion. And yes, I think many of them are stylish (but I especially like the ones that stand out, the ones that are not just your regular old penny loafer).

“Those Shoes are SO expensive!” Thursdays

Posted in Fashion, Health & Wellness, Shoes with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 13, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

As a foot doctor and shoe expert, I’ve been asked by many people¬†if more expensive shoes are better than cheaper versions. Well,¬†sometimes, but not always.

It depends on several factors, including the materials used, talented designers, manufacturing costs, research efforts, etc. The main idea is quality. A good quality shoe is usually¬†more expensive and usually more comfortable and therefore “better.” But sometimes you are paying extra just for the name brand. The only way for¬†YOU to tell for sure is for¬†YOU to go try them on, walk around in them, and see for yourself which ones feel better on your foot. Not every shoe is made for every foot type. With shoes, as with patients,¬†it depends on a lot of things.

But just for fun, let’s take a look at some really expensive shoes that we wouldn’t mind owning!

One little shopping tip: as¬†a podiatrist, I recommend that you go shoe shopping late in the day when your foot may be more swollen, giving you more of a true fit. If you go shopping in the morning, the shoes may feel just right¬†when you try them on, then later when you get home they may feel too tight. How many of us have experienced this?¬†Mmm-hmm…yep, me too!

Another shopping tip: don’t expect shoes that feel too tight in the store to¬†“stretch out” later. Chances are if you wear shoes that are too tight, you¬†may develop a blister and then never wear them again! Or if you do try them again, they are just¬†too tight. It’s never a good idea to get shoes that are too small in length or width! If they¬†don’t feel good in the store, they won’t feel good at home (or worse, they won’t feel good when you’re out at night or at work for an 8 hour day! Ouch!)

“When Can I Wear My High Heels Again?”

While being in private practice for over ten years as a podiatrist, I have seen all types of shoes on all types of feet! One of the questions that comes up all the time is “when can I wear¬†my heels again?” So I’ve been thinking about all the different shoe questions that my patients ask me, and I’m going to answer them here…one at a time! If you have a shoe question, please feel free to ask away.

So back to the same old question “when can I wear my heels again?” Ladies, as a shoe lover myself, I feel your pain. I know how many of you want to wear those beautiful pumps, stilettos, high heeled boots, and strappy sandals. I know because, as a foot doctor, I hear it all day long! But…I am sorry to say, it’s not a simple answer. It all depends. It depends on your foot problem, it depends on your shoe, and it depends on how long you wear the shoe. Let’s look at each one of these a little more closely.¬†

Your foot problem: Why aren’t you wearing the¬†heels in the first place? Are you in pain? Where is¬†your foot¬†pain? Is your pain in the ball of the foot, the arch, the heel, or the ankle? What is your diagnosis? What treatments have you already had?¬†All of these questions have to be considered. Someone with metatarsalgia (pain in the ball area of the foot)¬†will get a much different answer than someone with plantar fasciitis (pain in the heel). Patients with metatarsalgia will usually experience more pain if heels are worn, while some patients with plantar fasciitis feel some relief with a very small heel (very small, about 1-2 inches).

Your shoe: How high are your heels? How narrow is the toe box (the front of the shoe)? Are you wearing the right shoe size? It is amazing how many women squeeze into shoes that are too small! It’s silly really, ladies. Nobody cares what size shoe we wear except ourselves! Are your shoes open toe or closed toe? It may make a difference! Do you need orthotics, and can you wear them with your shoes? Yes, you can wear them with many women’s dress shoes, even heels, but you¬†will probably¬†need a special type of¬†orthotics made specifically for your heels.

High heels with orthotics

(Orthotics like these can be found at my online store: http://www.ourdoctorstore.com/colon/store/item.asp?ITEM_ID=184 )

How long do you wear the shoe: When it comes to high heels, it’s all about balance. Don’t try to wear 5 inch heels for an eight hour shift at work, especially if you work standing up! For a seated job, knock yourself out! If you work a long shift sitting down at a desk, you can handle the heels for a much longer time than someone who works on their feet!

As stated previously, it’s not a simple answer. It varies greatly. And it’s really case-by-case. But I hope that answers some of your shoe questions! ūüôā

Why Do Women Have So Many Shoes?

Posted in Fashion with tags , , , , , , , , on October 4, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

Jimmy Choo stilettos

Why do you have so many pairs of shoes?

How many¬†of us women have heard that question before? Most men just don’t get it! It’ simple! Let’s sum it up for them…And while we’re at it, let’s tell them why we love shoes too! We do! We love our shoes! Here are just a few quotes to show you what I mean:¬†

Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” ‚ÄĒ Marilyn Monroe

“The perfect high heel is not a marriage, but rather a threesome when fantasy, form and function meet.” — Qiana Markham

“Return the shoes?! I can’t talk to you when you’re being hysterical!” — Gabrielle, Desperate Housewives

“I see a pair of shoes I adore, and it doesn’t matter if they have them in my size. I buy them anyway.”–Kiera Knightley

“Funny that a pair of really nice shoes makes us feel good in our heads ‚ÄĒ at the extreme opposite end of our bodies.‚ÄĚ — Levende Waters

You see…the truth is women are in love with shoes…and we need a lot of them!¬†

Here are some of The Reasons Why Women Are In Love With Shoes And Why Women Need So Many Of Them:

Guess by Marciano Kira peep toe pump

Guess by Marciano Kira peep toe pump

1.¬† We have choices: What woman wants to get up day after day and wear the same old shoe? Unless¬†women are¬†wearing¬†uniforms to work and have no choice about it, not many! We¬†wear different clothes everyday, so we need to have just as many¬†shoe choices as well! ūüôā¬†

2. We need variety: So now that we’ve established we have choices, we need a variety of shoes to¬†choose from when putting together the perfect outfit.¬†Just think of how different your dress will look with boots vs stilettos. The shoes can make the outfit work…or fail!¬†=]¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†

3.¬† It’s a¬†great deal:¬†¬†Let’s admit it, ladies. We have all purchased at least one pair of shoes just because they were on sale! Of course, they fit well and looked great too, but it’s hard to pass up a good deal on shoes…especially when we can justify that we can wear them later, and we will! ūüėČ

4.¬† They make us feel good: It’s just like having a good hair day! When¬†you put on that perfect pair of shoes, you feel like you “can conquer the world.” Well, us women do anyway…for men, maybe it’s the perfect power suit or driving that perfect car…for some of us women, it’s the perfect pair of shoes! ūüôā

5.¬†¬†They last a long time: Since we have so many shoes, and we don’t wear the same¬†ones¬†on a daily basis, they usually last¬†for a long time! Provided we are buying quality brands, this is true. With shoes, like it or not, you get what you pay for!¬†¬†:]

6.¬†They’re an investment: When we splurge on those designer heels or boots, we know it is an investment. And we take great care of that investment so that they do last¬†a long time. Like I¬†previously mentioned, those¬†high end shoes¬†hold their value because they last so long! ūüôā¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†

7.¬†¬†They’re our BFFs: Someone once said a diamond is a girl’s best friend, right? Well, I am here to tell you that a shoe is a woman’s best friend!¬†We love them, and they¬†love us back (or at least that’s what we believe)! ūüėȬ†

Ladies, please feel free to add some more reasons why we love our shoes and why we need so many of them…let’s educate the men so that they understand and know what to get us for our next birthday/holiday, ok? (Hint, hint! My birthday is in 3 weeks…I’m just sayin’!)
