Would you run in a High Heel-a-thon? Even if it’s hosted by “Live with Regis & Kelly”?
“The High Heel-a-thon is back!” Really? Why? Oh, I see…for charity (and to win prizes and money)…what??? As a foot doctor, I can definitely say that this is not a great idea! Actually, as a person with common sense, I can say that this is not a great idea!!!
For the second time, “Live with Regis & Kelly” will host this event, where women from around the country can come to run in their high heel shoes, alongside Kelly Ripa for charity, cash and other great prizes.
On September 22, 2010 “LIVE with Regis & Kelly” will host a “High Heel-A-Thon”, sponsored by Zappos.com, Inc. with registration proceeds going to The Heart Truth® Campaign. This event has two parts. The first event is a race for the female registrants only, which will ultimately be a 150 yard dash in high heel shoes. And to be fair, there is a second competitive event for male registrants only, which will be a separate race; however, the men will not be wearing high heels. (For some reason, that doesn’t actually seem fair…hmmm…)
Shoe requirements and restrictions (for the women) are as follows: minimum heel height of 3 inches; maximum heel circumference of 3 inches; no wedges; no taping shoes to your feet; shoe can not be modified or altered from its original and intended design in any way; no boots; no part of the shoe can extend above the ankle. Shoes will be checked by race officials at the time of registration on the morning of the event and are subject to rejection at the officials’ sole discretion.
Wow! Can you imagine running in 3 inch heels? We’re not talking running a short distance to catch a cab or grab the elevator door either…we’re talking running a race, a 150-yard dash! I wonder how many podiatrists and other health care professionals will be on hand to take care of the sprained ankles, fractures, and other scrapes and bruises that will occur when these women trip, fall, and get trampled upon? This is what 3-3 1/2 inch heels that meet the requirements look like:
3.5 inch heels:
Well…either these women really, really want these prizes:
For the first of the primary events, the 150 yard dash for female participants, the prizes will include a trophy, a medal and the following prizes: 1st Place: 2011 Volkswagen Jetta (value approximately $24,000), 2nd Place: $5,000, 3rd Place: $2,500 .
For the second of the primary events, the separate dash for male participants, prizing will consist of a trophy and a 1st Place monetary prize of $1,000.
OR… these women really want to donate their $20 entry fee to The Heart Truth® Campaign. Personally, I would rather mail a check to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. (see below)
