Getting Ready for Rain!

Posted in Fashion with tags , , , , , , , , , , on September 27, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

Fall is here!!!

(although in Southern California we are still in triple digit temperatures…) Yes, it was over 100 degrees today…but that’s not true for the rest of the country, and it’s not going to last for long! So before we start thinking about the holidays (you know they’re right around the corner!), let’s get ready for the fall season and the rain that comes with it.

I’ve been checking out all of this fall’s boots for months now, and there is no shortage of them! From peep toe ankle booties to stiletto over the knee boots, I have to admit that I love them all!!! As a shoe lover, boots are just a no-brainer! Even rain boots are getting more and more fashionable, high end, and even sexy. Yes, I said it! I’ve seen a few that are very hot! 🙂

Tell me what you think of these:

Heels: How high is too high?

Posted in Fashion, Health & Wellness with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 27, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

In general, podiatrists agree that high heels are not good for the feet. Our professional organization, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), recommends heel heights of two inches or less for women’s shoes to avoid future foot pain and problems. I completely agree with that for everyday shoes for women. I have said time and time again…that for the office, for an eight hour work day, for prolonged periods of time spent on your feet…wear a low heeled shoe for comfort, stability, and overall foot health. But I have also said that for an occasional night on the town, business meeting, formal occasion, wedding, hot date night, etc., it is okay to wear your favorite heels. I wear mine on these occasions, and I wear my running shoes or my Crocs to work with my scrubs.

Here is an excerpt on this very issue from another (podiatry) blog that I write, written back in May 2010, and here is the link:  http://drcolon.blogspot.com/2010/05/what-would-your-feet-tell-your-teen.html

“Don’t wear high-heeled shoes that are too high.” … It’s definitely okay for a special occasion, a party, an event, or a night on the town, but not for an everyday ritual. If you have to dress up for work, wear a low-heeled shoe. Your feet will thank you for years to come. Just ask your moms and grandmas…they love to share how they wore high heels for years and how their feet suffer in their golden years for it.

So ladies, let’s be smart, let’s be good to our feet, and let’s let loose a little too! We can still have fun and look good at the same time. What I propose is that we can have comfortable yet sexy shoes. As Salvatore Ferragamo said, “Elegance and comfort are not incompatible, and whoever maintains the contrary simply doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” Well said, Mr. Ferragamo! In celebration of this thought, let’s look at some of his wonderful shoes:

“Those Shoes are Hot!” Thursdays

Posted in Fashion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 23, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

“Those shoes are hot!”

I hear that all the time…from women and men…directed at all sorts of women…in all sorts of places…and about all sorts of shoes! Ladies, our men are looking and noticing our shoes. Not only do we love our heels which make us feel sexier and make our legs look shaplier, but our men agree. Men love the way we look in our stilettos, our strappy sandals, and our high heel boots.

These strappy Coach sandals in this photo were a gift to me from my man…and boy does he love when I wear them! Granted, I do not wear these to the office for an eight hour work day…these are for a night on the town, a nice dinner, or a hot date. (Remember, for a long day at work, wear a more sensible shoe with a lower heel. Even kitten heels or wedges will work for the office. Save those stilettos and high to the sky shoes for special occasions!)

I would love to hear what your favorite, sexiest shoes are. Which shoes just make you feel better as soon as you put them on?

I will show you a few of mine that always make me feel sexy and always get noticed!

1. My Coach snakeskin heels:

2. My H & M beige suede heels with ruffles:

3. My Coach Teagan grey suede tie heels:

4. My G by Guess black and white Lucan T-strap wedges with rhinestone detail:

5. My thigh high black leather boots:

What do you think? Hot or not??? I say “those shoes are hot!” for this week’s “Those Shoes are Hot!” Thursday. 🙂

“Pump Day” Wednesday

Posted in Fashion, Health & Wellness with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 22, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

It’s the first day of fall, so let’s take a look at some great fall pumps!

My perfect pump for the fall is grey, and it’s high (but remember what I always say as a foot doctor and shoe lover, everything in moderation! Ladies, we can wear our stilettos if it is for a short time, and if we don’t overdo it!)

Whether open toe or closed toe, I love each and every one of these pumps!

Here are some of my top picks for this week:

CLOSED TOE PUMPS:

🙂  My picks for this week’s “Pump Day” Wednesday!  🙂

(Just a note about these wonderful, delicious heels: As you can see, you do not have to spend a fortune to look great this fall! There are some great deals out there in every price range. But make sure they fit good and feel great before you leave the store because the last thing you want to do is invest in some beautiful shoes that are too tight and uncomfortable to wear once you get them home!)

“Pump Day” Wednesday

Posted in Fashion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 22, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

You’ve heard of “Hump Day” Wednesday, but what about “Pump Day” Wednesday?

That’s right! It’s Pump Day Wednesday! Let’s take a look at our favorite pumps…you know, the weekend is right around the corner so let’s get ready for it by planning out what we’re going to wear (on our feet) to those dinners, parties, and everything else.

And let’s face it, women love pumps. Well, women love shoes in general, but pumps in particular. There are so many styles of pumps to choose from these days…from classic to peep toe to strappy to platform to kitten heels…and then there are the colors, embellishments, and materials from leather to suede to python, etc. Wow, who knew there was so much going on with pumps?!

And why do we love them so much? They’re sexy. Linda O’Keeffe describes it pretty well in her book  Shoes: A Celebration of Pumps, Sandals, Slippers & More. “Physically, it is impossible for a woman to cower in high heels. She is forced to take a stand, to strike a pose, because anatomically her center of gravity has been displaced forward. Her lower back arches, her spina and legs seem to lengthen and her chest thrusts forward. Her calves and ankles appear shaplier, and her arches seem to heave out of her shoes.”

Here are a few examples for last week’s “Pump Day” Wednesday:

Classic:

Peep Toe:

Strappy:

Platform:

Kitten Heels:

Um…I think I would wear any of these! Yeah, for sure I would! 🙂

Please feel free to comment on any of these pumps or post pictures of your own pumps that you own, love, or would love to own. 🙂

“Pamper Your Tootsies” Tuesdays

Posted in Fashion, Health & Wellness with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 22, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

Tuesday has one good thing going on…at least it’s not Monday! Let’s really pamper our tootsies today! Why today? Why Tuesday? Well, for starters, think of all the abuse we put our feet through this past weekend! From the weekend warriors who really crank up their workouts on the weekends to the partiers who wore their high-to-the-sky heels on Friday and Saturday nights to the rest of us who wore flip flops or sandals or slippers or any other non-supportive shoe this weekend…we really put our feet through a lot on the weekends.

And then there’s Monday, or Manic Monday as I call it…on Monday morning we are generally running around like crazy to get stuff ready for the week. We have to think about our work week, our kids’ schedules, our kids’ clothes, our menus for the week, our errands that we have to get done, etc…so on Mondays we usually do not take time out of our busy schedule to pamper ourselves or rest (not even a little), not to mention pampering our feet.

So let’s slow down a little on Tuesday, get ready to put it into high gear for hump day Wednesday, and pamper our tootsies a little. Here are some great shoes that are comfortable, supportive, and some are even stylish. 🙂

1. If we’re going to wear sneakers to work and if we can wear sneakers to work, we can do it in style with some little Coach sneakers like these. These little sneakers are stylish, comfy, light weight, and we can wear our orthotics in them. Winner for pampering our feet! 🙂

2. Loafers like these Cole Haan (of course, they come in many colors and a few different styles from penny, tassled, or plain) are also comfortable, light weight, and some of them are conducive to the wearing of orthotics. And loafers are trying to make a comeback this fall, so we could say they’re stylish…Another winner! 🙂

3. If we’re looking at open toe shoes, sling backs, or low heels, these would be a great choice! They’re made by Easy Spirit, so the comfort level is definitely there. The peep toe effect is in style, so it has that going for it…I say another winner! 🙂

4. These slip-ons by Rockport are another great choice if we’re looking for an athletic look. They’re light weight and made for walking. They could look stylish with the right casual outfit or jeans. Pampering of the feet with these slip-ons? Yep, for sure! 🙂

5. Is it raining outside yet? If so, let’s pamper our tootsies by keeping them warm and dry with some cute rain boots like these by Coach! We don’t have to dress down or lose our style when it rains, ladies! Let’s keep it going with the right trench and boot combo…Winner! 🙂

6. So it’s not raining yet, but it’s getting cold, right? Let’s keep our tootsies warm and comfy in some flat or low-heeled suede boots like these. Grey is in…so I love these! WINNER! 🙂

7. Well, I had to throw in a pair of Crocs just to be complete! They’re very light weight and comfortable…and some orthotics can be worn with them. Runners love them and wear them after races to pamper their feet, so why not after a long day of work? Granted, they are not the most stylish shoe in this list, but they are winners in the comfort, light weight, and pampering departments. 🙂

There it is! My “Pamper Your Tootsies” Tuesdays recommendations for this week!

Sunday’s Fun Days

Posted in Fashion, Health & Wellness with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 19, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

Sundays are for resting, relaxing, going to brunch, spending time with friends and family, watching football, and basically having fun, right? Mellow, relaxed fun, but still fun! (Sundays are also for rejuvenating and getting ready for another busy week, but let’s not talk about that yet! Let’s save that for Monday’s blog!) Let’s take a look at some fun foot fashions for this week’s Sunday’s Fun Days:

Although school has started and the end of September is drawing near, it doesn’t feel too much like fall is approaching…it’s still hot and sunny here in Southern California, so this Sunday could be a beach day for sure! For the beach, here are some cute and comfortable fun sun shoes:

wedge beach sandals by Michael Kors $89.00 at Shoes.com

The Orthaheels are also available for sale in my online store for $54.95: http://www.ourdoctorstore.com/colon/store/item.asp?ITEM_ID=737

Sandalistas beach sandals by aetrex $129.97 at Healthy Feet Store.com

Sandalistas beach sandals by aetrex $129.97 at Healthy Feet Store.com

The Sandalistas sandals by aetrex are also available for sale in my office for $80.00 plus shipping & handling. Click this link for contact information: http://footdoc.moogo.com/

Just a note about the last two sandals: Both of these sandals are super comfy with the built-in orthotic, and that is why, as a podiatrist and shoe expert, I sell them in my office. Most patients can fit into them comfortably, and the orthotics that are built into the Sandalistas can be adjusted (if necessary), making them customizable for certain foot conditions. I have a pair of each of these sandals, so I can personally recommend them for you!  🙂

Next Sunday let’s look at some other fun shoes, and I will include some that I personally own and wear! 🙂

Casual Fridays for Your Foot

Posted in Fashion, Health & Wellness with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 17, 2010 by The Shoe Expert

Does your office believe in “Casual Fridays”? It’s so common now that it seems as if everyone is doing it, but are some people taking it too far? Casual Fridays doesn’t mean flip-flops or Ugg boots! It means “business casual.” Let’s take a look at some business casual shoes that are still cute, fashionable, and even hot!

Wedges: Whether they are wedge espadrilles, peep toe wedges, wedge booties, or wedge boots, wedges will work perfectly for that Casual Friday look!

Flats: Especially if you’re wearing high heels all week, you can afford to take a break on Friday and put on those flats! There are so many cute flats out there, and they can be paired with pants or a skirt for a business casual look. (But just a note on that: if you’re going to make a speech to the company or a big presentation to the boss, stick to your professional look with your trustworthy pumps! Remember, these suggestions are only for Casual Fridays when you’re in the office with your co-workers, not when you’re out wining and dining that executive trying to get that big account or client.) Flats come in so many forms too…from ballet flats to loafers to flat boots…some are cute, some not so cute! But they definitely work well on Casual Fridays!

Sneakers: Yep, I said it, “sneakers!” On Casual Fridays we can get away with wearing sneakers…if we choose classy sneakers and pair them with the right jeans or pants. Now I’m not talking about your dirty running shoes or worn out canvas sneakers! I’m talking about nice, clean, stylish sneakers that look cute and appropriate in most offices or workplaces IF they are paired with the right outfit. Here are a few examples:

Well, those are my picks for this week’s Casual Fridays, 9/10/10.
