Dr. Oz Describes the Three Worst Shoes for Your Feet

Dr. Oz says “UGGs Are Bad For Your Feet”
On his television show on Jan. 5, 2011, Dr. Oz said that shearling boots like UGGs have two main problems. First, they give virtually no support to your feet, so your feet flop around around inside. He suggested a solution for this problem: to place orthotics in the boots to add extra arch support. Sound familiar? I blogged about that very thing recently in my “If You Love UGGs, You’re Going to Love Them Even More Now!” blog post, adding that using a shearling foot insert with a shearling boot feels super warm and comfy. Dr. Oz also suggests that the second problem with UGGs is that they can make your feet hot and sweaty. And if peopole wear them without socks, it can lead to foot fungus. A simple remedy to fix this problem is to wear 100% cotton socks, wicking socks, and / or use a topical antiperspirant foot medication.
Dr. Oz says “Thigh High Boots Are Bad For Your Feet”
Dr. Oz said that thigh high leather boots can compress a nerve that is located near the upper outside of your calf, just below the knee joint, especially if the boots are very tight. This comression can potentially paralyze your nerve, which can make it impossible for you to flex your foot upwards. He suggests that you consider over the knee leather boots with a zipper or a tie which allows you to loosen them, at least when you are seated for long periods of time.
Dr. Oz says ”Flats Are Bad For Your Feet”

Dr. Oz said that, believe it or not, flats are bad for your feet. Some of the new flat shoes available to women, including flat gladiator sandals and ballet flats, separate your foot from the pavement by only about 1/8 of an inch. Plus, you often have to struggle and strain your foot muscles to keep your foot balanced on the shoe because there is little to no support. If you can bend the shoe in half, then it is not a shoe that you want to walk long distances in or stand in for long periods of time. Some of the medical problems that result from wearing flat shoes include shin splints and plantar fasciitis. Instead, Dr. Oz said we should wear shoes with at least 1″ heels.
As a podiatrist, I have to agree with Dr. Oz. Here is my summary of his shoe analysis:
1. UGGs are too flat, need an arch support, and should be worn with socks.
2. Thigh high boots or anything that compresses the peroneal nerve should be avoided.
3. Super flat flats and shoes that bend in half have don’t have enough support for your feet.
Good job, Dr. Oz!

We’re only a few days into winter, but it seems as if everyone is freezing, snowed in, or somehow affected by this cold weather. (Even in Southern California, it’s been cold and rainy! And, well, we’re just not used to that! Haha!) So how do we keep warm, keep our feet healthy, and still look good at the same time? Well…let me show you! I’ve been on the lookout for the warmest, coziest, furriest boots currently for sale, and here are some great finds!
Asos ‘White Wooly’ shearling black leather boots on sale for $117.23 at Asos.com
2011 Christian Louboutin High Heel Furry Boots
The Jimmy Choo studded UGG Boots! ($795 at Bergdorf Goodman)
Guess Obelize faux fur boots $157.50 at Macy’s

Seychelles Cryptic Ankle Boots $150.95 at Zappos
MICHAEL by Michael Kors ‘Parker Bootie’ in black suede $198 at Zappos
BCBGMAXAZRIA Boots $159.30 at Bluefly
Daniblack Ian OTK boots on sale for $234 at Zappos
The Cool People Varghese $179 at Zappos
Gucci white wool knit and leather ‘Lockhart’ wedge boots $716 at Bluefly
Dolce & Gabbana brown leopard white patent trim tall rain boots $420 at Bluefly
Burberry Mid House Check Weather Boots $395 at Zappos
Jambu Cruise boots $173 at Zappos
I know that some of these may be a little over the top for some of us, but there is definitely something for everyone here…and in every price range too!
And remember in this harsh winter weather to keep your feet warm and dry to prevent foot problems such as Athlete’s foot, bad foot odor, and other bacterial and fungal infections. Just because your feet are hidden away from the world for a few months does not mean that they should be neglected. Show your feet some winter love and put them in some cozy, comfy boots!
Dedicated to your foot health and to your shoes,
It’s my birthday…so I had to post my Shoe Wish List

Why Do Women Have So Many Shoes?

Why do you have so many pairs of shoes?
How many of us women have heard that question before? Most men just don’t get it! It’ simple! Let’s sum it up for them…And while we’re at it, let’s tell them why we love shoes too! We do! We love our shoes! Here are just a few quotes to show you what I mean:
“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” — Marilyn Monroe
“The perfect high heel is not a marriage, but rather a threesome when fantasy, form and function meet.” — Qiana Markham
“Return the shoes?! I can’t talk to you when you’re being hysterical!” — Gabrielle, Desperate Housewives
“I see a pair of shoes I adore, and it doesn’t matter if they have them in my size. I buy them anyway.”–Kiera Knightley
“Funny that a pair of really nice shoes makes us feel good in our heads — at the extreme opposite end of our bodies.” — Levende Waters
You see…the truth is women are in love with shoes…and we need a lot of them!
Here are some of The Reasons Why Women Are In Love With Shoes And Why Women Need So Many Of Them:
1. We have choices: What woman wants to get up day after day and wear the same old shoe? Unless women are wearing uniforms to work and have no choice about it, not many! We wear different clothes everyday, so we need to have just as many shoe choices as well!
2. We need variety: So now that we’ve established we have choices, we need a variety of shoes to choose from when putting together the perfect outfit. Just think of how different your dress will look with boots vs stilettos. The shoes can make the outfit work…or fail! =]
3. It’s a great deal: Let’s admit it, ladies. We have all purchased at least one pair of shoes just because they were on sale! Of course, they fit well and looked great too, but it’s hard to pass up a good deal on shoes…especially when we can justify that we can wear them later, and we will!
4. They make us feel good: It’s just like having a good hair day! When you put on that perfect pair of shoes, you feel like you “can conquer the world.” Well, us women do anyway…for men, maybe it’s the perfect power suit or driving that perfect car…for some of us women, it’s the perfect pair of shoes!
5. They last a long time: Since we have so many shoes, and we don’t wear the same ones on a daily basis, they usually last for a long time! Provided we are buying quality brands, this is true. With shoes, like it or not, you get what you pay for! :]
6. They’re an investment: When we splurge on those designer heels or boots, we know it is an investment. And we take great care of that investment so that they do last a long time. Like I previously mentioned, those high end shoes hold their value because they last so long!
7. They’re our BFFs: Someone once said a diamond is a girl’s best friend, right? Well, I am here to tell you that a shoe is a woman’s best friend! We love them, and they love us back (or at least that’s what we believe)!
Ladies, please feel free to add some more reasons why we love our shoes and why we need so many of them…let’s educate the men so that they understand and know what to get us for our next birthday/holiday, ok? (Hint, hint! My birthday is in 3 weeks…I’m just sayin’!)

Fall is here!!!
(although in Southern California we are still in triple digit temperatures…) Yes, it was over 100 degrees today…but that’s not true for the rest of the country, and it’s not going to last for long! So before we start thinking about the holidays (you know they’re right around the corner!), let’s get ready for the fall season and the rain that comes with it.
I’ve been checking out all of this fall’s boots for months now, and there is no shortage of them! From peep toe ankle booties to stiletto over the knee boots, I have to admit that I love them all!!! As a shoe lover, boots are just a no-brainer! Even rain boots are getting more and more fashionable, high end, and even sexy. Yes, I said it! I’ve seen a few that are very hot!
Tell me what you think of these:
Do any of these rain boots do it for you? Picture them with the perfect pair of jeans and a fitted little trench coat, and you’ve got yourself a hot little outfit, even in the rain! ;’)

“Those shoes are hot!”
I hear that all the time…from women and men…directed at all sorts of women…in all sorts of places…and about all sorts of shoes! Ladies, our men are looking and noticing our shoes. Not only do we love our heels which make us feel sexier and make our legs look shaplier, but our men agree. Men love the way we look in our stilettos, our strappy sandals, and our high heel boots.
These strappy Coach sandals in this photo were a gift to me from my man…and boy does he love when I wear them! Granted, I do not wear these to the office for an eight hour work day…these are for a night on the town, a nice dinner, or a hot date. (Remember, for a long day at work, wear a more sensible shoe with a lower heel. Even kitten heels or wedges will work for the office. Save those stilettos and high to the sky shoes for special occasions!)
I would love to hear what your favorite, sexiest shoes are. Which shoes just make you feel better as soon as you put them on?
I will show you a few of mine that always make me feel sexy and always get noticed!
2. My H & M beige suede heels with ruffles:
3. My Coach Teagan grey suede tie heels:
4. My G by Guess black and white Lucan T-strap wedges with rhinestone detail:
5. My thigh high black leather boots:
What do you think? Hot or not??? I say “those shoes are hot!” for this week’s “Those Shoes are Hot!” Thursday.

Ladies, I would love to hear how much you’d be willing to pay for top of the line boots…or shoes…Do tell! Don’t be shy!

“Step Away from the Sneakers?”

Have you seen Piperlime.com’s new ad that reads “STEP AWAY FROM THE SNEAKERS”? As a podiatrist and shoe expert, I think it’s great! It shows a woman wearing lace-up military-style black booties with a heel of about 4 inches. Click this link or see ad below: http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=54005&mlink=54005,2175174,imgLinkModuleShopAds&clink=2175174
So, let’s all take a step away from the sneakers this fall and find other comfortable shoes and boots that are also stylish. This goes perfectly with my Facebook Fan Page Shoe Quote of the Day: “Elegance and comfort are not incompatible, and whoever maintains the contrary simply doesn’t know what he’s talking about” by Salvatore Ferragamo. Shoes can and should be comfortable AND fashionable at the same time. Who says we have to sacrifice one for the other? I say we don’t have to. As a foot doctor, I think that if we just lower the heel a little and use the right materials, our shoes can look great and feel even better!
Let’s look at some examples of shoes and boots that we can wear this fall that are both comfortable and beautiful!
(All of the shoes above can be found and purchased on www.piperlime.com ‘s website.)
Just one last thing: Don’t get me wrong…I’m a woman, a doctor, and a shoe lover! And I love my sneakers and wear them when appropriate, like when I’m running or going to the gym or while I’m operating in the O.R., but we really do need comfortable shoes to wear to those dinner parties, networking meetings, work functions, etc. And what about the women who work in an office or other professional setting? They should not have to choose between pretty heels that hurt their feet and comfortable shoes that are ugly as ____!!!
Let’s hear it for this ad and for the fall shoes this season! Hooray for getting it, Piperlime!
